经常误用的词和词组（4）
Certainly.
有些人滥用这个词，就像其他人滥用very一样，试图强调任何一句话，乃至每一句话。这种习气在口语中不好，在文章中更糟。
Character.
这个词常常是完全多余的，纯粹是出于罗嗦的积习。例如：
acts of a hostile character
（具有敌对特征的
行为）
hostile acts
（敌对行为）
Claim（动词）
该动词带有名词宾语时，意为“要求，主张”。明确表示这个意思时，也可以随从句。例如：
He claimed that he was the sole heir.
（他声称他是唯一的继承人。）
但即使在这个句子里，还是用claimed to be the sole heir比较好。claim不能用作declare（宣布，断言），maintain（坚持，维护）或charge（指示，控告）的替换词。例如：
He claimed he knew how.
（他自称知道底细。）
He declared he knew how.
（他声称知道底细。）
Compare.
Compare to 指出或暗示在本质上被认为是不同种类的事物之间的相似性；
Compare with着重指出在本质上被认为是相同种类的事物之间的差异性。例如：
Life has been compared to a pilgrimage，to a drama，to a battle.
人生被比作一次历程，一出戏，一场战斗。
Congress may be compared with the British Parliament.
美国国会可以和英国议会相比。
Paris has been compared to ancient Athens；it may be compared with modern London.
巴黎被比作古代的雅典，它可以和现代的伦教相比。
Consider.
该词表示“认为是”（believe to be）时，后面不跟介词as。例如：
I consider him as competent.
I consider him competent.
（我认为他是有能力的。）
Consider 表示“仔细考虑或讨论”（examine或discuss）时，后面跟介词as。例如：
The lecturer considered Eisenhower first as soldier and second as administrator.
讲演者首先把艾森豪威尔看作军事家，然
后把他视为行政官员。
Contact.
该词作及物动词用时，意思模糊不清，而且带有妄自尊大的口吻。和某人接触、联系不要用contact，而需用get in touch with him
（与他联系），或look him up（看望他），或phonc him（打电话给他），或find him（找到他），或meet him（会见他）。
Cope.
该词是不及物动词，和介词with连用。在正式的文章中，表达“处理某事或对付某人”意思时不用cope，而用cope with。例如：
I knew she’d cope.（jocular）
（我知道她会应付。——语气诙谐）
I knew she would cope with the situation.
（我知道她会应付这
种处境。）
